British Council

The British Council promotes global peace and prosperity by fostering connections, trust, and mutual understanding between the UK and countries around the world. It combines the UK’s strengths in arts, culture, education, and the English language with its extensive international presence, engaging with young people, creative professionals, and educators across more than 100 countries.

In 2024, the British Council celebrates 90 years of impact, having created opportunities for millions while building lasting international relationships. Adapting to an evolving world, it remains true to its founding values—facilitating dialogue, sharing ideas, and bridging differences. By fostering mutually beneficial partnerships between the UK and other nations, it strengthens the UK’s global influence, encouraging international collaboration in areas like education, business, and cultural exchange.

The British Council empowers individuals by providing skills, confidence, and connections that enable them to transform their lives. Through initiatives in language learning, high-quality education, and globally recognized qualifications, it equips people to thrive in an interconnected world. Additionally, it supports creative exploration and innovation, helping individuals build professional networks and contribute to their communities.

Collaboration is at the core of its mission. The British Council works with governments, educational institutions, and cultural organizations both in the UK and internationally, amplifying its impact to benefit millions worldwide. It maintains a long-term approach to building trust, operating independently from the UK government while upholding national interests.

With a presence in over 200 countries and territories, the British Council reached 600 million people in 2022–23. Its funding comes from partnerships, contracts, philanthropy, teaching, and exams, alongside support from the UK government. Established in 1934, it remains a UK charity governed by Royal Charter, committed to global engagement and cultural exchange.
